Synopsis in German
In einem russischen Provinznest der Zarenzeit herrscht trotz erster Anzeichen sozialer Unruhe doch eher ein altväterlich verschlafenes Leben. Als der Erste Weltkrieg ausbricht, wird alles gewaltig durcheinander gewirbelt. Der alte Grešin distanziert sich von seinem guten deutschen Freund Robert Karlyc, der mit linkischem Patriotismus seine Koffer packt. Blut und Elend eines furchtbaren Krieges lassen das patriotische Pathos auf beiden Seiten der Front bald hohl klingen. Deutsche und russische Soldaten verbrüdern sich. Darunter auch der Schustersohn Nikolaj Kadkin und der deutsche Soldat Müller III., den es als Kriegsgefangenen in Kadkins Provinznest verschlägt. Hier verliebt sich Müller III. in Man'ka, die Tochter des alten Grešin, und bekommt von Kadkins Vater sogar einen Arbeitsplatz, weil "er zwar ein Deutscher, aber schliesslich doch eben auch ein Schuster ist". Schwierig wird die Situation erst, als der an der Front zum Krüppel geschossene Sohn zurückkehrt... (DIF)
